About "Brass, Grass, and the Gospel Truth"

KN BGG cover copy

I am so thankful for God putting a song in my heart and for growing up with many kinds of music in our home. It developed an appetite in me for musical variety. It’s my prayer that you enjoy my songs, dance a bit, and find encouragement and hope. Know that even in the hard times as we look to God for help, he is faithful and true to see us through and work everything for our good and his glory. God bless you as you journey through this gift of life.

  1. “You called my name” was born when Jesus called me to know and follow him at the age of 13.  1 Samuel 3:10 - The Lord came and stood there, calling as at other times, “Samuel, Samuel”. Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening”.  Thus began a relationship that will last for eternity.

  2. “All God’s Children Got Trouble” This saying is something I’ve heard my mom say lots of times over the years. Job 5:7 says man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward. Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. We are not alone in our struggles and knowing Bible stories that demonstrate how God worked in some pretty tough times is so encouraging.

  3. “Remember” The word remember is found 240 times in the Bible. Exodus 13:3 - Moses said to the people, remember this day in which you went out from Egypt, from the house of slavery, for by a powerful hand the Lord brought you out. The psalmist David encouraged himself in the Lord. Turning to God’s word and remembering his faithfulness in our lives gives comfort and hope and strength during hard times.

  4. “Make Room” Psalm 10:4 - Because he is proud, that evil person doesn’t turn to the LORD. There is no room for God in any of his thoughts. Jerimiah 29:13 - You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart. There are so many distractions in our world. When we intentionally set aside time to sit in his presence, meditating on his word, he pours out blessings he custom makes for us.

  5. “Teach Us to Number Our Days” was written during my quiet time with Psalm 90. It is a call to live each day with purpose and intention to do God’s will, knowing this life on earth is temporary.

  6. “The Beauty of a Naked Soul” was written after a Bible study with a group of women who shared their hurts and struggles in life. Psalm 23:3 – says that God restores my soul. Isaiah 53:5 - But He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by his stripes we are healed.

  7. “Come Back” In Luke 15:11-32 Jesus shares the parable about the prodigal son who comes back home in brokenness to a loving father who forgives and receives him with open arms.

  8. “Sunshine After the Hurricane” Jesus is the light after dark storms in our lives. The song idea came from our son- in- law commenting that he loved the way the sky/sun looked after a hurricane. John 1:5 - The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  9. “Georgia Farm Girl” was written after going to a songwriter retreat and observing the surroundings of the presenter and hearing part of her story. Ecclesiastes 5:18 - Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his heritage. V. 19 As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor-this is the gift of God. 20 For he will not dwell unduly on the days of his life, because God keeps him busy with the joy of his heart.

  10. Here for the Music” A friend went to a funeral, and jokingly said he just went for the music. I found that to be rather humorous but took this idea a little further and wrote this song since I have had songs in my heart from an early age.

  11. “Get ‘er Done Girl” was written for a fellow teacher when she retired. I am dedicating this song to ALL the get ‘er done girls that know how to get ‘er done! Philippians 2:13 - it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

  12. “Put it in a Basket “is a fun song about giving the negative things that people say to God. 2 Corinthians 10: 5 - Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

  13. “I Still Get to See Jesus” A comment was made to me about why I had not sung at a particular event. My reply was what became the name of this fun song. All the things we were not able to do won’t matter in the end. The most important thing is seeing Jesus one day.

  14. “Soul Rest” This song is the result of meditating on Psalm 62. I am part Irish, so this little tune popped out. It’s a good reminder that our rest, our salvation, the one to pour our hearts out to and trust, is God alone.
