Grace for the Journey

Story Behind the Songs

01 - A Black and White ’56 Chevrolet

Every year when school got out for summer, we would leave before sunup and dad would drive us to Miami to see our grandparents, arriving by dinnertime. 1 Timothy 6:17 Command those who are rich in this world not to be arrogant, nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

02 - Blind

Retiring after working 50 years, my dental hygienist wrote a poem about one of her clients that lost his eyesight in his adult years and remained positive and productive, despite his hardships in life. Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine.

03 - Grace for the Journey

When our daughter Gracie got married, she asked me to write a song for the wedding, which I sang for the rehearsal dinner. 2 Peter 1:2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

04 - Homemade

This is about my dad’s life from early on until he lost his dad, through a tragic house fire. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

05 - I Am Water

This was written as a response to the terrible flood in Nashville in 2010, followed by the Deep-Water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf. Jesus is the living water. John 7:38. Jesus came to give abundant life. John 10:10.

06 - Rest

A friend from church shared her concern over her newborn son’s safety in the nursery at the hospital and asked me to write a song about God’s care for her baby. Psalm 91: 4 He will cover you with his feathers and under his wings you will find refuge.

07 - Smith Lake State of Mind

Some of my favorite childhood memories are of time spent at Louis Smith Lake. My husband and I rented a cabin on the lake to celebrate our anniversary one year and this song just showed up. Psalm 23: He leads me beside the still waters; He restores my soul.

08 - The College Dance in 1949

This song was written for my mom after dad passed away to celebrate and say thanks for the good memories from my childhood and growing up years. Psalm 136:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His love endures forever. It was the blessing of God.

09 - Walk with God

This is one of those songs that happened after meditating on God’s word. It plainly states that walking with God takes focus and surrender to keep you eyes on Him, listen to him, follow him, and feast at his table. Hebrews 12:2 Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus…. John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me. Revelation 3:20-21 Jesus says, behold I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door (your heart) I will come and in and eat with that person.

10 - What I Am

My songwriter friend Melanie asked me to write this song to pitch to a song plugger looking for gospel songs for Willie Nelson. He did not pick up the song to use, but I have sung it many times, folks relate to it. 1 Timothy 1:9 He saved us and called us to a holy life-not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.
